Mulberry silk on both sides — the side that touches your skin and the side facing out — over a padded interior that blocks light without pressing on your eyelids. It weighs 50 grams. After two minutes you forget you're wearing it.
Why silk, not cotton
Cotton and polyester drag. Every time you turn on the pillow, the fabric tugs slightly at the skin around your eyes and temples. Silk doesn't — it glides. That's the difference between waking up with the elastic mark across your face or waking up with none.
Built to be worn
The strap is elastic and adjustable, with no rigid buckle to dig in if you sleep on your side. The cut respects your eye socket, so you can open and close your eyelids underneath without any friction.

Usage warnings
Do not use while driving or operating machinery. Stop use if eye or skin irritation occurs. Hand wash or machine wash on a delicate cycle at 30 °C with a neutral detergent and dry in the shade. Not suitable for children under three years old.

Light and melatonin
Melatonin production depends on the absence of light, and the retina can't tell a streetlight from sunrise. As long as light keeps coming in, the body produces less than it needs, even if you think you're in the dark.
Friction on the eyelid
The skin on the eyelid is the thinnest on the body. Eight hours of fabric brushing against it every time you turn over isn't harmless: silk has a much lower friction coefficient than cotton and the synthetic fibers used in most cheap sleep masks.

Some people can't stand a sleep mask because they notice it the whole time. The threshold at which an object stops being perceived on the skin is low: below a certain weight, with the right surface, the brain discards it as a stimulus within a couple of minutes.
